I was feeling the 7 beers from the night before but at least I slept until well after sunrise. I was not hot so there was not rush to get on the road. It worked out well as I was passing through Frailes just in time for lunch at 2pm. I will have to see we can time that for future rides.
I headed East out of town and stopped for a coffee in Santa Ana. They make pretty good coffee.
Soon I was off the two lane road and on a single lane and the start of the climb. When I reach the top I thought I should finally check out the town that was obscured by the top of mountain: Hoya del Salobral. The first time I rode here huge number of people were driving up there for a festival. I also knew there was a restaurant at the top: Restaurante Mirador de la Morenita. The thing that had detered me before was it was a lot more up. As you follow the signs for the restaurant you go counter clockwise around the mountain. There are a few houses there but then nothing but view of the road I came up on. Another sign for the restaurant pointed up a steep dirt road which was too loose to ride up and I had to walk. Still not a lot of town around. Then all by itself was the restaurant and it did have a nice view. Naturally, not open but it looked nice. We probably need reservations.
Below was a church - Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza - and some buildings. I had to walk the dirt portion but most of the way was concrete but very steep. I checked out the church - did a drive by. I think the town is famous for some healer or something. The house of local healer 'Santo Custodio' is now a small museum.
Soon I was back the the start of the mountain top loop and ended my detour. After a tiny bit more of uphill I had a 10km downhill with some really, really steep parts. Since the road is narrow and windy you have to brake a lot.
As I rolled through the town of Frailes I noticed a restaurant with a lot of cars parked in front. I went in and had a very good menu del dia for 11. I will certainly try to time a 2pm passthrough of Frailes from now on. This was simply not possible in the summer. Noon is a bad time to be on the bike.
I made a trip out for a desperately needed coffee and to buy some chain lube. I was trying to confirm with the bike guy, Nono, that Alpha's bike reservation was all set up. All I managed to do was confused the hell of him.
