France: Day 15 - Angouleme to Le Tatre

We were going to save Aidan some riding by putting him on the train for the first 30km of route distance.  We went to the train station and the train had turned itself into a bus and no bikes allowed on the bus.

This meant he had to ride the whole day which turned it into a big day for him.  Fortunately, the route today was not very direct and we cut the distance a lot by taking a direct path.  It was a lot flatter today and the end it worked out.

We made good time to Chateauneuf and turned 30km into 20 by taking short cuts.  We arrived early enough because of the attempted train that it was still well before noon.  We visited the Supermarket and got some ride treats and juice.

During the day we used the tow rope on the longer hills.  It was the difference between rolling to the top or walking.

Mush of the day was riding beside vineyards with the occasional field of what we think is wheat.

There was a restaurant about 10km from Chateauneuf which we could make and still be in French feeding hours.  After using the tow on two big hills we had a lot of downhill and easily made the restaurant.  It looked like an empty bar with a patio.  I asked the lady, "Manger?" and she pointed to a door that said "toilettes" over it.  I looked in and there was a dinning room half full with dinners.

They had a serve yourself salad and dessert area.  The lady took our order for the main dish.  We both had the spaghetti Bolognese.  Nothing exceptional but it was satisfying.  I tried the cheeses to finish and took a sample of about 6.  I loved every one of them.   No idea what they were.

Looking at the map we only had 19km to go and all of it on paved rail trail with a tailwind.  We actually made really good time on the day.

We arrived at our chambers de cotes before 4.  When we were about 50m from the place in front of the village church, my tire went flat.  I walked the rest of the way.

At the house I repatched it and rode bagless, light and free to the Intermarche 2km away to get stuff for dinner.  There are no nearby food options.

We enjoyed our bread, cold cuts and cheese.  The grapes where ok. Milk and wine were good.  For dessert I got Aidan a pear tarte of some sort.  Neither of us actually tried to read the French.  I poisoned the poor boy with peach almond tarte.

After eating half of it because it was really good, he paused and said something is not right.  That's when we realized almond was in the title.  He just barfed up his dinner.
