We had breakfast with a French family who also stayed at our chambers de cotes. The upstairs of the house was set up as three or four rooms with baths. I think it was a full house last night but we only saw the French family.
We had a very short day due to the hotel desert we were in. Only 28km today so we had a late start at 11am.
Today's route was almost entirely along rail trails with a tree canopy which would have been nice if it had been hot. The weather was trying to be a nice day but it was just too cool.
Google maps was showing a restaurant just off the route near where we would be just after noon. When we got there it was closed. Was it a holiday? Later someone said it was a holiday. You just don't notice things like holidays on tour. Usually they are an inconvenience. Anytime things you rely on are closed it can be an issue.
We surrendered the idea of getting lunch and after a flat in Aidan's rear tire it was even more unlikely. We got to the hotel just after 2 but got food after the girl checked with the chef. We had no choice but it was fine. We had a nice omelette and fries with salad.
Flats are a thing this trip. I'm riding on a twice patched (same puncture) rear tube. Aidan's front tire is three times patched (two punctures). His rear is the one that failed today. It was his bike's original tube. I couldn't find a leak but it gradually lost air so I replaced it with the second Michelin. We are anticipating an explosion.
Outside of our room is the restaurant patio. An older English couple reported another cyclist was at the hotel. I walked around town and then got Aidan so we could go to the town museum. It was just a few rooms of old farm tools and old barrel making equipment. Tree resin collection was a pretty big deal in town back in the day. It was interesting 30 minutes but I'll bet we were the only visitors the whole day.
Back at the hotel we met Marcus from Germany, Manheim area I believe. He was cycling to Santiago de Compostela and hopefully Finestra. We had a beer and chatted until 7 when the restaurant reopened.
We ate with Marcus and he is as bad at French menus as we are. The English couple and their friends helped us with the menu. We knew what we were eating tonight.
The Internet for the whole town is broken. This is inconvenient if you want to watch YouTube or pay your hotel and restaurant bill. I needed to pay in cash which I did not have enough of. The owner drove me to a nearby town at high speed to use the ATM.
