France: Day 19 - La Reole to Agen

We had a really good breakfast at our B&B.  The place was very nice and it was certainly the best place I have stayed in for a long time.

We had a few short climbs to the town of Agen, then crossed a bridge and soon we were beside the canal.  The entire rest of the day was beside the canal except for a short detour up a steep hill to the town of Le Mas-d'Agenais where we had a good but pricey lunch.

Riding along the canal is pleasant but there isn't much to say about it.  Water on one side always.  The path was sometimes roughly paved and sometimes more smoothly paved.  It was definitely quite rough in places.  I am feeling it in my hands more today than usual.

During the day we passed or were passed by a couple that were at the B&B last night.  They were German or Dutch or something.  We said hi but never had a conversation.  They seemed quite reserved.  They entered Agen at the same time as us and walked the sidewalk beside the canal bridge over the river.  Because they were walking we felt we should too.  I'm sure you are supposed to walk across the bridge but joggers and cyclists passed us.  I generally feel as long as you are respectful of others and don't go fast it's ok to ride.

Today was another one of those days that was often really nice with sunshine and then occasionally cooler and cloudy with a few drops of rain.  I put my jacket on and took it off several times.

Our hotel in Agen is a baron's family home.  It is quite nice.  Down right fancy.

Agen around the hotel is quite old and tile-like flat bricks are used in many of the buildings.  The streets are a maze.  Some are narrow alleys.

We had dinner at a Sicilian restaurant near the hotel.  I was hungry so I forgot to take pictures. I ordered an appetizer that was huge.  I'm so glad Laurie said no to an appetizer and ate half because it was a meal.  It was a lot of tasty fried seafood.  The lasagna and ravioli were good and regular sized.  I confused the waiter when ordered I ordered the terra cotta for dessert.  I meant panna cotta.
