France: Day 7 - Swimming the Loire River to Meung-sur-Loire

I heard rain on the roof during the night.  It was drizzling when I woke up.  The forecast did not look good.

We had a nice breakfast at the hotel. I liked this hotel.  Our bikes were in a garage a half block away and we fetched them and loaded in front of the hotel.  Off we went in a light drizzle.

The path today was mostly a paved trail on top of the levy.  There were some quiet roads and enough muddy trails to get us very dirty.

The drizzle turned to light rain and we were in that most of the day.  We dried out a little bit before Orleans but we were wet all day.

We stopped for lunch at about 25km in Jargeau.  Aidan was pretty miserable and cold.  The restaurant had a nice lunch but it could have been warmer inside.  I brought my seatpost pack inside and started fishing out clothes for Aidan and me to put on.  This helped and we kept the extra layers the rest of the day.

This was meant to be our longest day so far at 70km but the weather was making it really difficult. Aidan was struggling so I told him he could take Uber if we got past Orleans.  I was hoping if he got that far he might try the last 20km.

Sometime before Orleans the rain stopped and we started to dry out a bit.  This was the only time all ride we felt like taking a picture.

After riding through most of Orleans, Aidan said, "Call me my Uber".  We called one and the guy didn't think it would fit the bike in his car.   I looked  in the trunk and there was plenty of room.  I took off the wheels and losened the handlebars and it fit fine.  He was very concerned about having a dirty bike in his car.  He wasn't all that happy to have a dirty Aidan in the car either.

The Uber drove off and I continued on the route at a much faster pace.  I made the last 20km in good time and Aidan had only been there a few minutes.   He was waiting in the garage the apartment had for our bikes.  Hopefully, it is safe enough.

When we got into the apartment we realized it would have been just as easy to put them in the large entry room on the ground floor.  We were too tired to make the change.  The apartment is a good size and could only be improved with better mattresses.

It does naturally have a standard European death shower.  The shower is in an old tub well above the bathroom floor with high sides and almost no flat area in the tub.  Getting in and out is super treacherous.  This is really common in Europe.   This and showers with no curtains or walls  that soak the floor.

The town is cute and has a chateau of course.

We went for dinner at a crepe place.  It looked closed and when we tried the door was locked but a lady quickly opened it and said they were open.  She had to turn the empty dining room lights on.  Despite being the only customers, the crepes were excellent.

It was a not a fun ride today.
