It was supposed to be a nice day but the same pattern continued. Sun, wind, clouds, Rian, repeat.
I went out while Aidan was still sleeping and got pastries. Last night we had gotten some supplies and I made myself way too many instant coffees.
We packed up and headed out stopping by a bike store to get another inner tube. Aidan picked up a leak in his tire just as we were trying to find the hotel in the rain last night. I had replaced his tube with my one spare. They had no long valves so if I have a problem it may not do me any good.
Just as we got back to the route I realized my sunglasses were missing. I didn't think they were back in the room because we always do several room checks and I don't remember them being in the room. I must have lost them in the wet frustration trying to use my phone to find the hotel. It's not like it's sunny at all.
We did a very slow 20km with a few more little climbs than previous days. The route used the levies sometimes but detoured away from the river at times. There were a lot more turns today.
We were looking for lunch in the rain just before 1 and only found a cranky cafe lady who had no food. Looking on the map on the much more direct main road there was a place 3km down the road. We headed that way and found a restaurant in a cave that was really good. It was kind of fancy and they were welcoming even though we were wet and muddy.
The wigglely EV3/6 route through here in nice weather would be really pleasant with a picknik lunch - there were many picknik tables along the way - but in the rain with the mud, the roads were better. Traffic wasn't too bad and it would not have been a pleasant ride but it was a lot faster to Amboise. The plan for the day had been for Aidan to take the train after 40km from Amboise to Tours.
I left him at the train station in the sun and continued on. A few minutes later the weather turned and I was in the rain again.
Aidan got to the hotel about 20 minutes before me and was checked in (except for the paying part) and his bike stowed in an enclosed back porch of the hotel with the help of the manager who was from Michigan.
We found a funky little restaurant that featured pork. Lots of pork. We ordered a pork products appetizer which was a ton of salami, sausage, cold cuts, wurst, pork belly and a few items we we not quite sure about. We were stuffed at that point. Our pork dishes were very good and we both finished everything. Aidan even had desert.
Tours is a nice town to walk. Grand avenues and buildings.
This would be more fun in better weather. Today I'm found to do a long day by myself to Poitiers. It is a detour from the route but easier to get a train to and my old friend Dave will be meeting us.
