France: Day 18 - Bordeaux to La Reole

Early to breakfast just after 7:30 because there was a lot to do this morning.  Aidan enjoyed his own room for the first time in a while.  We had to transfer Aidan's riding stuff that Laurie could use.  We had to collect the stuff we had mailed to Bordeaux.  Aidan needed some of it for his travels.  We needed to send a box to Barcelona with all the stuff nobody needed for the next two weeks.  Lots of reorganizing as Laurie took over on the bike and Aidan went off on the trains.

Aidan needed to catch a bus to the airport to fly to Prague at 10:30 and Mom wanted to see him off so I went to La Posted by myself.  I took an Uber there in 5 minutes and the actual posting took less than 5 minutes but a few people were tying up the agents for a really long time.  I was next in line for two agents for twenty minutes.

When I got back baby boy was gone.  Aidan was a good travel companion.  He will did a great job on his first bike trip.  Hopefully it is the first of many.

Back at the room Laurie and I packed up and headed out.  It was 11 when we started working our way from the train station back to the route.  Before we connected with the bike trail we had to fight a little traffic for a few blocks.  After that it was a dedicated bike lane or path until the last few kilometers.

After going over the Pont de Pierre we were on bike path along the river.  We we turned away from the river we stopped at a big bakery to get sandwiches and some quiche for lunch.  We were there at the same time as a foursome from Vermont we had chatted with at our hotel.

Shortly after the bakery the route became a paved rail trail.  For the next 50km enjoyed the easy railway gradients.  We hardly noticed we were climbing but several times we coasted at 20km/h for long stretches.

We had booked a bed and breakfast place near La Reole but it was easier to get to directly so we left the route, saved a few kilometers and took a road that wasn't that busy but did have fast cars.

The B&B was not near much and fortunately we were able to get dinner there.  That had a selfservice bar and we got a bottle of rose.  Dinner was quite good despite being primary vegetarian.  The dessert looking radish and goat cheese thing was really good.

It will be an early night tonight.
