When we woke around 8am it was overcast and damp outside. Not fully raining by misty. We opted for the hotel breakfast before packing up and heading out just after 10. The ground was wet but we weren't really getting very wet. A few minutes later it wasn't raining at all ... just overcast and grey.
At Montargis just before we rejoined the route and our canal, we stopped at Market Chalette sur Loing for lunch supplies. Montargis is were the Loing and Briare canals meet. Here we would switch to Canal de Briare. Montargis is a very pretty town and the cycle path along the canal in town is beautiful.
The cycle path along the Briare has a lot of nice new pavement and we were going at a good clip. Aidan did have to stop a lot as spider webs kept attacking him. At about km 25 we came across some picknik tables and stopped for lunch.
From lunch on we played leapfrog with a couple on ebikes. They were loaded and we probably will see them again.
The EuroVelo 3/La Scandibérique continues along the Briare to the Loire River. However, Châtillon-Coligny directly to Gien saves 20km and since the only hotel we seemed to be able to find was in Gien we cheated. This was the difference between a 60km day and an 80. 80 was too much so we took the short cut. Our ebike friends did too, passing us just as we left the route along the canal.
The rain held off until just before Adon, but ahead of us we could see the rain front. We plowed through and it only rained for 15 minutes. Just before we got to the end the ebike couple we under a tree waiting it out. They passed us in Adon when we tried to get cafe at an Italian restaurant that said open but was not.
We were both getting pretty tired and hurt a lot. A potato chip break helped a bit.
Finally, we arrived in Gien and found our hotel on the wrong side of the river. The Hôtel Anne de Beaujeu is to be avoided. It is way overpriced. At 60€ I'd grumble not great but it will do. At twice that I'm not happy. In travels totaling over three months in Ontario, Spain, Ecuador and Colombia, this rates in the bottom two.
Dinner was at a good burger place nearby. We had to rush out as Aidan had a D&D date with his friends online. I was hobbling back on a very sore foot and was have ng trouble keeping up.
I woke up this morning was a very sore swollen right foot. Don't know what happened to it but the heavy duvee may have bent it in a wierd position and something is out of place. It hurt all day. I know something will crack and it will by right again. I hate getting injured while sleeping.
Again today Aidan got faster.
